Tamarind Indian Restaurant - Wappingers Falls, NY

Published: October 17, 2021

We recently had dinner at the Tamarind Indian Restaurant on Route 9 in Wappingers Falls, NY. It was our first time there. I’ve heard good things about it but never sampled the food until now.

When I walked in, I wasn’t particularly impressed with the decor, but I didn't come to critique the decor. I came to eat and eat we did! The food, and not the decor, was the star of the evening.

What We Ordered

I ordered the crab cakes appetizer and an entree of shrimp moilee. Hubby ordered the lentil soup and the tiger shrimp kabob.

Crab Cakes

The crab cakes were tasty and not filled with a bunch of non-crab ingredients as so many other restaurants are guilty of in their attempt to “stretch” the crab. These cakes were filled with crab meat and were tasty. However, in my opinion, the crab cakes paled in comparison to the shrimp moilee.

Honestly, I believe anyone ordering the shrimp moilee should be blindfoled just before the dish is brought to the table. Doing so allows you to fully appreciate the wonderful aroma of the dish. Because we both ordered shrimp dishes, I wasn’t quite sure which dish was which. I was hoping the aromatic plate was mine.

Shrimp Moilee

I asked the server the names of the dishes (he probably thought I was nuts) and was thrilled when he pointed to the aromatic dish and said it was shrimp moilee. I almost jumped up to hug him.

A Quick Moilee Digression

Oh, before I go into detail about the shrimp moilee, let me say that my hubby thoroughly enjoyed the lentil soup. He also enjoyed one of the crab cakes (yes, I did manage to share one with him).

Back to the Moilee

My shrimp moilee had a medium heat level as requested. It was perfect. The coconut, shrimp, spices, and seasonings were soothing to this woman’s soul. It came with a side of perfectly cooked white rice. I normally don’t eat the carbs that accompany my dish, but I made an exception here. I just had to experience the rice with the shrimp moilee. I wasn’t disappointed.

More Carbs

Hubby wanted bread to go with his food so he ordered naan. What a perfect complement to the shrimp moilee’s sauce. Like a starving woman, I used bits of naan to sop up the palate tantalizing sauce.

Naan

In order to fully experience the meal, I closed my eyes for a moment to enjoy the aromas, textures, and flavors. I don’t remember the last time I felt compelled to shut my eyes during a meal.

Tiger Shrimp Kabob

Hubby enjoyed the tiger shrimp kabob. He was expecting the kabob to be on the skewer, but it wasn’t. The skewer was removed and the shrimp were nicely arranged on the plate surrounded by a very hot (he likes very spicy food) sauce (not sure what it was).

Bottom Line

Yummy!

The meal at Tamarind was a treat to my taste buds. They’ve been longing for something different, and this sure fit the bill. Not only did the food taste good, but the ingredients were fresh and top-notch. I will most assuredly eat there again.
